The figure above shows the result after a lower speed collision. Only the center Shaft has pressed its associated Plate into the Energy Absorbing Material. The two outer Shafts have not connected with their Plates, and have passed through pre-formed holes in the Energy Absorbing Material.

 
The figure above shows the result after a higher speed collision where only the outer Shafts have pressed their associated Plates into the Energy Absorbing Material.
The inner Shaft has not connected with its Plate, and has passed through a pre-formed hole in the Energy Absorbing Material. More, but not all, of the Energy Absorbing Material has been crushed.
